Designing a playground for young children by creating a diverse area

In the commune of Alfortville, French urban planning and architecture firm Espace Libre, has created a highlight multi-functional play area for children and toddlers, located 7.6 kilometres from the centre of Paris.

The project was completed in 2014 with expendable budget of 400.000 euros. The area of ​​intervention was 2.500 square meters landscape and the successful result was a playground filled with colors and creative elements.

The playground is divided into three main areas: plot, raised section for adults and scattered central area for children. Each space has its own designated functionality, which manages to successfully integrate into the overall use of the playground.

The topography of the area consists of various micro altitudes – shooting steps, slopes, hollow elements… It is also interesting to see the wealth of materials that have been used in the project and how they contrast with one another – aggregate concrete, soft soil, asphalt, grass… Very beautiful for this playground is that it is colorful with shades of red, beige, blue, yellow, green brown and also different textures where children can walk on different surfaces, enjoying in the variety. There are different types of trees and shrubs, wealth of grasses and perennials.

There is also a plant palette – Panicum, Imperata, Spodiopogon, smell with lavender, oregano, verbena, and taste with sage, the menthe. This allows children to develop stimulated environment and have the opportunity to develop their skills that are essential for the future.

This magnificent place is great playground for every child. Parents can bring their kids, in this area filled with many opportunities for physical movement, generous quantities of fresh air, and colorful elements for enjoyment of the children. Also for adults this can be a lovely area for recreation and enjoyment in the warm summer afternoons.
