This lovely new established Spring Learning Center located in Hong Kong is created Joey Ho Design studio for children with the aim to help them achieve their development and learning potential during the crucial growth years. The designer came up with a concept that would enrich the learning experience. By bringing together the perspectives of a child and an adult, and manifested in the space, he wanted to facilitate a dialogue and interaction between the children, parents and educators.
Total space is filled with rainbow colors, cartoon characters, toys and stuff, eschewing the fairytale cliche of its genre. In this kindergarten architect demonstrated space where good-natured imagination is king. The palette of colors is fresh, mixing powder blue, chartreuse, white, and clear-finished blond wood.
Two furniture systems catering to children and adults respectively have been designed and placed together in the various functional spaces mixing the world of children and grown-ups. For example, the reception counter is fitted with stairs to allow kids to climb up and communicate with the staff directly. Cooking lessons take place in a professional-looking stainless-steel kitchen, scaled down. The bathroom features a dual height washbasin in the form of a fountain. It gives kids more fun washing hands and most importantly, it allows adults and children to share the same facility. The whimsical centerpiece of the lunchroom is a structural column styled as a tree, supporting a mezzanine “tree house.” When teacher says it’s time to come down, child just takes the slide.
The designer also added a little “adult” touch to the facilities throughout the center. In the multipurpose stadium, the basketball court lines are engraved onto the ceiling as LED lighting which produces an interesting and illusionary effect. Yet, audience bench seating and folding wall panels make it a flexible and functional space to accommodate a variety of activities such as seminars, forums or exhibitions.
All of these “adult” contexts are re-interpreted and executed in a way that can be easily comprehended by children.
This 700 square meter are functional and inspirational at the same time. Space is full with pieces which are not just furniture for sitting around, but they are toys that invite the kids to play, explore and interact. When those two different worlds are put together in same space you can only imagine what will be happening in the area filled with joy and happiness.
