Winy Maas: “The Stairs must create more liveliness on the roof and show a second layer in the next step of urban development of Rotterdam. A second coming. It would be good to make it a permanent fixture.”
MVRDV In honor of Rotterdam’s resilience and growth since that time, has unveiled plans to install a gigantic staircase out of scaffolding in front of Rotterdam Central Station. Open to the public this summer- the 180-step temporary installation, titled the Stairs, will offer sweeping views overlooking the entire city.
The steps are not just a way to get upstairs, they are more importantly to enjoy in the view on the rooftop of Groot Handelsgebouw. A temporary observation post gives you the opportunity to overlook the entire city. Also you will find on the roof the former cinema Criterion once popular in the 1960s that will temporarily offer a wide variety of films, debates and performances. There are catering facilities as well as an information point for the cultural events of Rotterdam!
The giant staircase are design formed by the angles of the Rotterdam Central Station and they will measure 29 meters in height and 57 meters in length.
”Now we create a new lookout where people can enjoy the unique view of this newly built city. From the cranes in the harbour, to the new city center, the North and Blijdorp Zoo. Fun for everyone,” says Anouk Estourgie of Rotterdam celebrates the city!
